Delos was one of the most sacred places of ancient Greece, and one of the most robust trade centers as well. The island undoubtedly owed its success to its superb location at the very center of the Aegean, allowing seafarers to meet it in the middle of their journey as they sailed from the major commercial centers of the antiquity. Its importance also made it coveted by the most powerful maritime powers that strove for control of its harbors and sanctuary.

The Caldera of Santorini was created about 3600 years ago when the volcano of Santorini erupted in one of the largest explosions in history, around 1613 BC. At the edge of the caldera are built many of the villages of Santorini, such as the island’s capital, Fira, Oia and Imerovigli. Akrotiri is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The first habitation at the site dates at least the 4th millenium B.C. The town's life came to an abrupt end in the last quarter of the 17th century B.C. when the inhabitants were abandoned it as a result of severe earthquakes. The erruption followed and the volcanic materials covered the entire island and the town itself. These materials, however, have protected up to date the buildings and their contents, just like in Pompei.
